Professional and Student Organizations

There are a variety of activities in which a student may participate outside of the classroom. The diversity and number of organizations in the department reflect the wide range of the students' professional interests. A partial list of student organizations follows:

  • Alpha Pi Mu

Alpha Pi Mu is the national industrial engineering honor society. Selection of members is based on their academic achievement.

  • American Society for Quality Control (ASQC)

The Industrial and Systems Engineering Department has a very active student chapter of the American Society for Quality Control. The competitive demands for superior product quality have placed a special emphasis on the role of this organization. In recent years, ASQC has rapidly grown both locally and internationally. The UB student chapter sponsors speakers, field trips, and other activities. It also participates in national ASQC conferences and events.

  • Graduate Student Association (GSA)

The Graduate Student Association is the representative body for graduate students at the State University of New York at Buffalo. Its two key purposes can be divided into representation and services. Its funds are derived from the Mandatory Student Fee ($48 on your bill) and are used to pay GSA staff and fund numerous programs and services offered to GSA members.

  • Human Factors and Ergonomics Society

Students interested in human factors and ergonomics are encouraged to join the University at Buffalo Student Chapter of the Human Factors Society. Regular professional meetings are scheduled with other relevant departments on campus. The Western New York Chapter of the Human Factors Society also has four to five professional meetings per year in either Buffalo or Rochester. Membership benefits of both groups include the chance to meet practicing human factors engineers and learn first-hand about current professional activities.

  • Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE)

The Institute of Industrial Engineers is the principal national industrial engineering professional society. Membership includes most of the practicing industrial engineers in the country. The UB chapter enables students to participate in the affairs of the society at a special student membership rate. Membership in the university chapter provides a subscription to Industrial Engineering, (a technical publication of the IIE) plus other information provided by the national organization.

The IIE student chapter has an active program of speakers, panel discussions, field trips, and social events to enhance its members' understanding of the field and job opportunities. Each spring semester, a regional student conference brings students from many universities together for a weekend program. The conference includes a student technical paper contest, and the winner is entered in a nationwide competition.

  • Institute of Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS)

UB students interested in becoming more acquainted with the operation research profession are able to become student members of INFORMS. The roster of this national organization encompasses most OR professionals in the United States. UB students are accorded most of the privileges of full members, including journal subscriptions at substantially reduced rates. The Department is often an active participant at the national meetings. When these meetings are held in the Northeast, they are well-attended by graduate and undergraduate students alike.

  • Omega Rho

UB has one of the founding chapters of Omega Rho, the national operations research honor society. Upper division students with outstanding academic records are invited to become members.

  • Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME)

The student chapter of SME attracts members interested in manufacturing processes and facilities and other related topics. The organization greatly benefits from its links with Western New York industries. The student chapter of SME sponsors speaker sessions, plant tours, and other activities at both the local and national levels.

  • Society of Women Engineers (SWE)

The Society of Women Engineers stimulates women to achieve full potential in careers as engineers and leaders by expanding the image of the engineering profession as a positive force in improving the quality of life and by demonstrating the value of diversity. They inform young women and the general public of the qualifications and achievements of women engineers and the opportunities that are open to them. SWE serves as a center of information on women in engineering and encourages women engineers to attain high levels of education and professional achievement.

  • School of Engineering and Applied Sciences Activities

The Industrial and Systems Engineering Department is represented in the Engineering Student Government by its students. Frequently, these students serve as officers and members of different committees which are vital to the administration of SEAS student activities.

  • Tau Beta Pi

Tau Beta Pi provides an engineering-wide honor society for juniors and seniors demonstrating exceptional academic performance.
