B.S. in Industrial Engineering

Program Description

Students pursuing a B.S. in IE can complete their degree requirements within four years, and go on to careers as industrial engineers or further their education through a variety of graduate programs. Our BSIE program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET). During the freshman and sophomore years, IE shares many courses in common with other UB engineering programs, making transfer among these programs easy. Because there are some differences, a student should declare his or her major as early as possible, preferably by the end of the third semester.

Notes on Technical Electives:

The current program requires 5 technical electives as follows:

  • A minimum of 9 credit hours (3 courses) from the IE department including 3 hours of IE 441 or IE 435.
  • Two other technical electives (TEs) may be drawn from 400 level electives in the industrial and systems engineering department, 300/400/500-level courses offered by other engineering departments, or approved departments in the College of Arts and Sciences or in the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (see the IE director of undergraduate studies for details on departments meeting this criterion). Note that electives which substantively duplicate coursework required for the IE degree, or other electives taken, can NOT be applied to the degree. (Generally, for instance, this precludes using EAS 308 or similar courses for a TE). Selected courses from other departments may also be applied with approval of the ISE undergraduate director (see the UB catalog for details).
Free Elective

Students may fill the free elective with any 3-credit course.

General Education Courses and Other University Requirements

In addition to the mathematics, science, and engineering science courses listed above, students must comply with university and School of Engineering and Applied Sciences requirements for general education courses, English requirements, and the Library Skills Workbook. Check with the Engineering School, 410 Bonner Hall, for details.
