The ISE Department at UB is an exciting place to be, with fine facilities, world-class faculty, committed staff, and students who are enthusiastic about the discipline and our programs. We have always been a separate department since the founding of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences in 1946; perhaps as a result we've developed a unique perspective and flavor. For example, we are one of the select ISE departments who practice real cooperation between our basic disciplines of Productions Systems, Human Factors and Ergonomics, Engineering/Production Management, and Operations Research. Joint projects and joint publications are a way of life for us, reflecting the inescapable fact that real-world problems do not often fit neatly into traditional teaching divisions. Neither do our faculty or students fit into neat categories. Their research not only ranges across academic disciplines but also challenges traditional notions of problem-solving and generates creative and groundbreaking solutions.
Our steadily expanding department includes thirteen full-time and six adjunct professors who teach and conduct their research in outstanding laboratory facilities. Over the past three years (2004-07), our faculty has been awarded a total of $14.5 million in research grants and contracts. During that same period, our faculty published ninety-four journal articles and sixty-six conference proceedings papers. At the same time, this continued excellence in research is balanced by a genuine dedication to teaching. When our students—both graduate and undergraduate—are asked what they like best about the program, their most frequent first response is "faculty accessibility."
Our ISE faculty has been ranked ninth in the country in scholarly productivity by the Academic Analytics' Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index; our Ph.D. programs are ranked eighteenth by both the National Research Council and the Gourman Report of Graduate Programs; U.S. News & World Report ranks us twenty-seventh in America's Best Graduate Schools 2008 in the Industrial/Manufacturing Engineering Specialty. Our faculty regularly earn prestigious honors and awards. Some of their recent honors include SUNY and UB Distinguished Professorships, two National Science Foundation Career Awards, Praxair-titled Professorship in Operations Research, and SUNY Chancellor Award for Excellence in Teaching.
ISE at UB offers a full range of courses: B.S. in Industrial Engineering, M.Eng. in Engineering Management, M.S. in the five core disciplines and a Ph.D. program that usually crosses discipline boundaries. We also offer research and application services to manufacturing and service industries and government at many levels.
Welcome to ISE!
