Your complete application package must include a statement of purpose briefly describing your background and your academic and career goals; this statement should be sent directly to the department. Note: If you are filing an online application, type your statement in the space provided for this purpose and submit it electronically. Otherwise, submit a paper version along with your other application material.
You must send either original or properly certified transcripts or mark-sheets directly to the department.
Three letters of recommendation are required. While we will accept letters from professional sources, we strongly prefer letters from professors who are acquainted with your academic interests, achievements, and abilities.
The aptitude test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is required of all applicants to our graduate programs. Arrangements to take the exam can be made through the Education Testing Service, Box 955R, Princeton, New Jersey 08541.
Note: The ISE Department Code for the GRE is 1301.
All international students from non-English speaking countries are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Minimum scores for the State University of New York at Buffalo are 550 on the paper test and 213 on the computer test.
The test scores must be dated within two years of the requested date of admission. Arrangements to take the exam can be made through the Education Testing Service, Box 955R, Princeton, New Jersey 08541.
No international application will be considered without a TOEFL score.
Because TOEFL scores are required for international applicants, it is strongly recommended that arrangements to take the test be made early in the academic year so that there is sufficient time for the scores to be reported before application deadline dates.
Note: The ISE Department Code for the TOEFL is 67.
All international applicants must submit a completed financial statement. Answer all questions thoroughly. An I-20 cannot be issued without this statement documenting necessary funds for each year of intended study (two years for a master's program; five years for a Ph.D. program).
If you have any questions, please contact us via e-mail at iegrad@eng.buffalo.edu. We will be glad to assist you in any way possible.
If you are interested in financial aid in the form of a teaching assistantship or research assistantship, please check the appropriate box on the application form. No applicant will be considered for financial aid until the application is complete and the applicant has been admitted.

In addition to holding a bachelor's degree in engineering or any of the mathematical, physical, behavioral, or health sciences, each entering student is expected to be skilled in a number of specific areas. Proficiency is required in mathematics through the level of multivariate calculus, probability and statistics considered from a calculus point of view, and computer programming. These requirements must be satisfied prior to admission. Students whose backgrounds have not adequately prepared them to enter the graduate curriculum directly may be asked to take appropriate undergraduate courses. Credit for these courses will not be applied toward the minimum number of hours required for the M.S./M.Eng. degrees. In exceptional cases, the department may admit an applicant who does not meet all these requirements; in such cases, the department will set special performance criteria for continuing in the program.
The Graduate Admissions Committee will consider applicants whose application packages are complete by the following deadlines:
| Fall | Spring | Deadline |
|---|---|---|
| February 1 | August 1 | For all students requesting financial aid (U.S. citizens and international applicants |
| April 15 | October 1 | For students not requesting financial aid who are neither U.S. citizens nor permanent residents |
